Common issues & diagnosis

Window regulators were problematic in E-Generation vehicles, but most of the design flaws were fixed by the F-Generation.

The most common issue with E-Generation regulators was that the plastic clips holding the glass would break. The motors and cables were also prone to issues.

What is the part's function?

The window regulator is a mechanism that allows for the raising and lowering of the vehicle’s windows.

The regulator usually consists of two rails and some cables—sometimes integrated into a card together—powered by a separate drive motor. We typically sell the regulator & motor as one assembly.

How to determine fitment compatibility

Most chassis codes will have one type of window regulator for each door—but there can be changes mid-generation that are non-exchangeable.

The best way to determine fitment compatibility of a window regulator is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue.

Provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.

Interchangeability between models

There is limited interchangeability of window regulators between models, mainly just between the front doors of sister models (X3 to X4 for instance.)

The drive motors are more interchangeable—but not as much as one might expect.
