Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Struts will wear out with day-to-day driving, especially if you are using bad roads or driving aggressively in urban environments. They are also frequently damaged in collisions.
Suspension issues can be hard to diagnose—but a damaged strut may present as bad ride or handling, particularly sagging or ‘nose-diving’. If you notice your ride-quality or handling has worsened, it may be worth getting your car checked by a suspension specialist.
A strut is a structural component of the suspension system, combining a shock absorber and a coil spring (or air spring) into a single unit. It supports the vehicle’s weight, absorbs impacts from road irregularities, and helps maintain tire alignment, contributing significantly to vehicle handling and comfort.
There are two different types of struts in BMWs: coil spring and air. Coil spring struts are much more common in BMWs. Whereas air struts are seen only in some of the luxury models, such as the G05 X5 and G11/G12 7 Series.
Traditionally BMWs have only used struts for the front axle (with the rear axle using shock absorbers and separate coils/pneumatic springs.) However, this has changed with rear struts becoming more common. For example, both the F25 X3 and G05 X5 (with standard/sport suspension) use four coil spring struts for each wheel, and the G11/G12 7 Series and G05 X5 (with air suspension) use four air struts for each wheel.
Air struts have replaced the pneumatic spring style suspension seen in E70, F10 and F15s.
Most models will typically have different struts for standard/sport suspension, as well as for cars with VDC. There will also be variations between engine types (to adjust for varying engine weight.)
Because of the variation, the best way to determine fitment compatibility of a strut is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
There is interchangeability of struts between models within the same generation.
Find Genuine Used BMW Struts
When it comes to your BMW, every component plays a vital role in delivering the exceptional driving experience synonymous with this iconic brand. Struts are no exception.
At BM Spares, we specialise in providing high-quality, genuine OEM BMW struts, ensuring your vehicle maintains its performance, safety, and comfort.
A strut is an integral part of your BMW’s suspension system. It combines a shock absorber and a coil spring, working together to support your vehicle’s weight, absorb road impacts, and maintain stability during cornering, braking, and acceleration.
Whether you’re driving a BMW X5 with an air suspension strut or a BMW 3 Series strut, these components are essential for a smooth and controlled ride.
Not sure if it’s time to replace your strut? Look out for these common signs:
- Uneven tyre wear
- Excessive bouncing after hitting bumps
- Reduced steering response
- Noises like clunking or knocking from the suspension
If you notice any of these issues, it’s essential to act quickly to prevent further damage to your vehicle.
Investing in OEM BMW struts ensures your vehicle continues to perform as designed. Unlike aftermarket alternatives, genuine struts are manufactured to meet the exact specifications of your BMW model, providing:
- Optimal Performance: OEM struts are engineered to complement your BMW’s suspension system, enhancing handling and ride quality.
- Safety and Durability: High-quality struts are built to withstand wear and tear, offering long-term reliability.
- Compatibility: With precise fitment for models like the BMW X3 strut and BMW X5 strut, OEM components eliminate the risk of improper installation or function.
For advanced BMW models equipped with Variable Damper Control (VDC), we offer genuine BMW VDC struts. These cutting-edge components adjust damping forces in real-time, providing a tailored driving experience based on road conditions and your preferred driving mode.
