Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Steering columns typically don’t have issues in late-model BMWs.
There were some common electrical issues in earlier E-Generation models, but we don’t carry stock for those anymore—not worth enquiring with us about them.
The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering rack (via the intermediate shaft.) Most of them are still manually adjustable, but some of the luxury models have electrical adjustable units.
There is usually one type of steering column for each model generation—unless that model offers an electrically adjustable one—and in that case there is usually just the two types: manual and electric.
Provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN, and we’ll check our incoming vehicles for a compatible steering column.
There is typically some interchangeability of steering columns between vehicles sharing a common platform. For instance the same unit is used across the F-Generation 1, 2, 3 and 4 Series vehicles.
