Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
The accelerator pedals in BMWs are well built—we haven’t seen any instances of them mechanically/electrically failing.
The surface of accelerator pedals can get damaged by rough footwear—which is typically what we’ve sold them for in the past.
Late-model BMWs use a ‘drive-by-wire’ system to operate the acceleration electronically—rather than using traditional mechanical linkages.
The benefit of the drive-by-wire system—aside from reducing mechanical complexity—is that it gives the driver greater responsiveness and precision. It also allows the ECU to consider other data points (such as engine temperature and current speed) before requesting acceleration, and smooths out increases and decreases in throttle application.
The pedal will operate using a sensor (either measuring pressure or position) which is read in electrical current and then passed onto the ECU.
Some pedals also have a button underneath them—this is there to trigger a downshift when the pedal hits the floor, providing maximum acceleration to the driver.
Each model generation can have a few variants of accelerator pedal—standard, sport, M-Performance, etc.
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of an accelerator pedal is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Accelerator pedals are highly-interchangeable between models. Some types first seen in F-Generation vehicles were also used in the later G-Generation vehicles.
