Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Oil pumps do fail in modern BMW engines. The main cause of failure is simply poor engine maintenance.
Using low-quality oil—or the wrong type of oil—can also cause havoc in BMWs sensitive engine components. We strongly advise using high-quality oil that meets your vehicle’s recommended specifications. You can find information on forums about what other BMW owners use.
The oil pump is the heart of the engine’s lubrication system.
It is responsible for circulating oil from the sump to various parts of the engine—including the bearings, pistons and camshaft—which is essential for reducing friction and cooling engine components.
In many later BMW engines (such as the N20 and N55) the oil pump also plays a critical role in the hydraulic valve lifting system—creating the high oil pressure that is required for them to operate.
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of a oil pump is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Oil pumps are often interchangeable between models with the same engine type—but this is not always that case. It is important to check determine interchangeability by matching the genuine BMW part number.
