Common issues & diagnosis

Occasionally uni-joints in intermediate shafts can wear out—however this is not a common issue in BMWs.

What is the part's function?

The steering column of any vehicle won’t directly align with the steering rack—so an intermediate shaft with two uni-joints is required to connect them. The shaft allows for rotational force from the steering wheel to be mechanically transferred through the dash and engine bay to the steering rack.

How to determine fitment compatibility

There is typically one type of intermediate shaft for each model generation.

The best way to determine fitment compatibility of a intermediate shaft is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)

If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.

Interchangeability between models

There is some interchangeability between vehicles sharing a common platform.
