Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
BMW’s hydraulic convertible lift motors are a common problem. They were particularly problematic in the E88 and E46 soft-top convertibles (which we no longer hold stock for.)
BMW convertibles use a hydraulic system to open & close their roof. These systems are driven by an electrically powered hydraulic motor/pump.
Each convertible model will usually only have one type of motor per generation, but occasionally there is be a mid-generation change.
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of a convertible lift motor is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Convertible lift motors are unique to a chassis code, there is typically no interchangeability between models or generations.
