Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Air ride compressors in all BMWs are prone to failure, but the compressor in the F15 X5 and F16 X6 (part number 37206875177) is a particularly common problem.
The problem with the F15/F16 compressor is that it is easily killed when there is a leak in the system. If a leak develops, either in the lines or the bags, the compressor will overwork itself in an attempt to maintain air pressure. As it overworks itself, the motor will generate enough heat to either burn itself out or fry the internal circuit board.
Before replacing a failed F15/F16 air ride compressor it is important to replace the bags and check the lines, otherwise the replacement will fail as well.
The air ride compressor is a key component of an air suspension system. It generates the compressed air required to inflate the suspension airbags (pneumatic springs.) In some vehicles it allows for adjustable control over the suspension firmness and ride height.
Each model generation will typically only have one type of air ride compressor. So if your car is an F15/F16, anything from an F15/F16 will fit.
Provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
We have only seen interchangeability of air ride compressors between X5 and X6 of the same generation. Otherwise them seem to be unique to each model generation.
