Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Electric water pumps in F and Generation BMWs are highly sensitive and require genuine BMW coolant—as it is free from nitrate & phosphate and includes a lubricant that the pumps require to run smoothly. Using aftermarket coolant, or topping up the coolant with water will kill these water pumps.
Water pumps are a part of the engine’s cooling system. They circulate coolant throughout the engine block, radiator and heat exchanger.
Modern BMWs use electric water pumps, which can be controlled independently of the engine speed, allowing for more precise cooling management.
In some BMWs there are also auxiliary water pumps for the turbochargers.
Model generations can have multiple version of water pump—usually for different wattage.
The best way of determining fitment compatibility is to match the BMW part number from the catalogue.
Provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Water pumps are highly interchangeable between models.
