Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Combination switch: Combination switches are not a major issue in late-model BMWs—but the slip rings and stalk mechanisms do fail occasionally. When this happens the simplest thing to do is buy a new one—but this can be prohibitively expensive. The alternative is to use a second-hand replacement—but it’s worth noting that this isn’t straight forward, as sometimes you can run into coding issues during installation.
Other switches and operating units: The other switches & operating units in BMWs are prone to wear & tear, but are not mechanically problematic as a rule.
Combination switch: The combination switch is located on the steering column. It controls various functions such as the indicator, high beams and window wipers.
Other switches and operating units: There are various switches in all BMW vehicles, but the centre console operating units—which became common in F-Generation vehicles—is now where a lot of controls are. This operating unit can control functions such as the drive mode, traction control, camera views and distance sensors—and was integrated with the gear selector in G-Generation vehicles.
Combination switch: Combination switches need to be matched using the BMW part numbers from the catalogue—as there can be multiple non-exchangeable types within each model generation. It’s also important to note that sometimes, a second-hand replacement combination switch can’t be recoded. If this scenario occurs during installation, you need to use your switches case, and swap over the individual damaged components—such as the slip ring or indicator stalk—from the unit that was supplied to you.
Other switches and operating units: All other switches and operation units should also be matched using the BMW part numbers from the catalogue—as there can be multiple non-exchangeable types within each model generation—for instance the center console operating unit will have one variant with surround view and another without.
Provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN and a description of the switch that you require—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Combination switch: Combination switches can have coding issues between different models.
Other switches and operating units: All other switches and operation units are highly-interchangeable between models—though it’s important to determine ensure that the genuine BMW part number matches, as some similar looking switches can be non-exchangeable.
