Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Mechanical repairs
BMW seat belts and seat belt stalks don’t have any common faults—but they can become worn over time. If these components appear worn, they won’t pass a roadworthy test.
Our seatbelts are suitable/legal for roadworthy purposes. And we ensure to only salvage them when they’re undeployed.
Collision repairs and VIVs
Late-model BMW seat belts utilise pretensioners—which are located in either the belt or the stalk. When the vehicle is involved in a collision these pretensioners trigger, deploying pyrotechnic actuators that tightening the seat belts to secure the passenger. These pyrotechnics make their component single-use—meaning they must be replaced after being deployed.
In most Australia states and territories it is prohibited to use second-hand restrain components from “impact damaged” vehicles in collision repairs. This also applies to VIVs (repairable write-offs.) And whilst this rule technically doesn’t include hail damaged wrecks, in practice VIV officers won’t accept any second-hand seat belt component.
Seat belts are fundamental safety features in all BMW vehicles, designed to secure occupants in their seats and reduce the risk of injury in the event of a collision. BMW seat belts incorporate advanced technology like pretensioners and force limiters to enhance protection.
Seat belt components in BMWs are very generic. Within any given model generation there will typically only be variations for colour, and between major body types differences (sedan to wagon) or seating configurations (five to seven seater X5.)
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of a seat belt component is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
There is a high-amount of interchangeability of seat belt components between models within the same generation.
