Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Front prop shafts themselves are not inherently problematic in most BMWs.
Generally speaking, the uni-joints in prop shafts can mechanically wear out over time. But there has only been one specific issue of premature wear in some of the earlier E70 X5s.
The most prevalent prop shaft issue though—which we’ve predominantly seen in E70 X5s and F25 X3s—is that one end can come loose whilst driving. This usually destroys the other components around it—such as the transfer case and transmission.
Prop shafts are used in BMW’s RWD-based AWD drivetrains. The prop shaft transmits power from the transfer case—which is connected to the rear of the transmission—to the front differential, and on to the front wheels.
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of a prop shaft is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
There is interchangeability of prop-shafts between sister models (X3 to X4, etc.)
