Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
We mainly sell intercoolers for collision repairs—but the plastic connections can degrade/crack with time. The fins can also be damaged by small bits of road debris.
The intercooler is a critical part of a turbocharged engine’s air intake system. When air is compressed by the turbocharger, its temperature rises to anywhere from about 100°C to 200°C (212°F to 392°F). This air is then passed through the intercooler, which acts as a heat exchanger, cooling the air before it enters the engine. Cooling the air increases its density, which improves combustion efficiency, increasing power output.
There are usually multiple, non-exchangeable types of intercooler within any given model generation.
The best way to determine fitment compatibility of an intercooler is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
There is some interchangeability of intercoolers between models with the same engine type—but not much.
