Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Instrument clusters are an issue in BMWs.
Analogue clusters and hybrid clusters can suffer electrical and internal mechanical failures—but this is irregular.
Fully digital LCD clusters—particularly in early F-Generation vehicles—are prone to display failure.
The later 6WB digital clusters have issues with the anti-glare surface, which is easily damaged by cleaning or UV.
An instrument clusters main purpose is to display vital driving information—such as speed, fuel level and warnings.
Later BMW vehicles have partially (hybrid) or fully digital units which display a wider range of vehicle metrics and navigation aids.
There are usually multiple, non-exchangeable types of instrument cluster within any given model generation.
Whilst it is relatively easy to match hardware by decoding VINs, the coding/programming of second-hand units is where it gets complicated. Many of the analogue and partially digital clusters can be coded/programmed with the right equipment/software, but fully digital clusters typically need to be virginised and then code (which requires the EEPROM chip being physically replaced, see this video to get an idea of what is involved.)
If you provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN and we can check for compatible hardware replacement, but we won’t advise on retrofits/upgrades (you will need to do your own research.) And for the coding/virginising/programming of a unit, in some cases we can refer you to a technician, but otherwise you’ll need to arrange that yourself.
Whilst instrument cluster do interchange between models, there are coding issues that make it complicated. Refer to the fitment compatibility section above for more information about this.
