Helpful Information
This guide aims to provide 'general' information about BMW transmissions, such as common issues that we've encountered and tips on determining fitment compatibility.
Coolers in general are not a common problem in BMWs—we mainly sell them for use in collision repairs.
Engine oil cooler
An engine oil cooler is a type of heat exchanger that dissipates excess heat from an engine to help it maintain its temperature. Most BMWs now have a solid-style heat exchanger integrated with the oil filter housing, but the M-Performance vehicles use a radiator style heat exchanger located behind an air-duct in the lower front bumper. The radiator style heat exchanger provides superior cooling, which is required in M-Performance vehicle’s that are designed to maintain performance under demanding driving conditions.
Transmission oil cooler
A transmission cooler is a type of heat exchanger that dissipates excess heat from a vehicle’s transmission. Basically all of these are now solid-style heat exchangers, most of which are separate components, but some of which are integrated with the (engine) oil filter housing coolers.
Power steering cooler
A power steering cooler is a type of heat exchanger that dissipates excess heat from the hydraulic power steering systems. They are typically a radiator style heat exchanger located behind one of front bumper air-ducts. These are no longer used in BMWs, as they’re now exclusively using electric power steering in their lineup.
The best way to determine if an engine, transmission or power steering cooler is compatible with your vehicle is to match the BMW part numbers from the catalogue. This can be done by decoding your vehicle’s VIN in a BMW EPC (electronic part catalogue.)
If you don’t have access to an EPC, provide our team with your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN—and we’ll check our stock for a compatible match.
Most coolers are highly interchangeable between different models and engine types.
